How I survived Dengue twice and preventing a third…

I am writing this to share my experience and hope it will be useful for mankind.

I got Dengue Fever twice, once in 2012 and then in 2019… first time was strain 1, the current strain in Singapore now is strain 3, which is what i got the second time.

Not sure the science behind but both times, my blood pallets count stopped going down after i drank papaya leaves juice (very bitter)

  1. Pluck only fresh looking Papaya Leaves from older Papaya trees.
  2. Pound them in old school pounder bowl with the pounder.
  3. Squeeze out the juice onto a table spoon.
  4. Take Two table spoons of the bitterest juice ( I chased it with a large glass of warm water to wash it down fast and rid my mouth of the taste).

and Frog Legs soup with Bittergoud.

Double Boiled Frog Meat with Bitter Gourd

  • 2 Japanese Bitter Gourd
  • 2 Fresh Whole Frog
  • 1tablespoon Red Dates
  • 1tablespoon Wolf Berries

Instructions

  1. Wash the frog legs and chop into pieces.
  2. Place the chopped pieces of frog legs over the sliced bitter gourd in a bowl. 把切片的苦瓜和田鸡腿摆在碗里。
  3. Add wolfberry, and grated ginger as desired. 加入枸杞和姜片。
  4. To taste the sweetness of the frog meat and bitter gourd, steam up to 3-4 hours in low heat. 要品尝田鸡肉的细嫰甜味,蒸至少3-4小时。
  5. Serve warm. 乘热吃 (Credit: Jurongfrogfarm.com.sg, where I bought my frog legs and they told me can buy from Sheng Siong too)

Dengue Fever is transmitted by a mosquito biting someone with Dengue Fever and the same mosquito bites next person. The next person will contract Dengue Fever.

To prevent transmitting Dengue to my babies, i deployed the following measures, (strictly my personal opinion after much testing, go check the science yourself ok):

  • DO NOT USE Repellent Patches. They don’t work. And worse, it gives you a false sense of security. I wish more parents know this. How many of our kids must get bitten by mosquitoes even with patches on before parents wise up?
  • Use Repellent Sprays. I use OFF for myself, wife and 7 year old daughter. Nice smell and it works. If i remember to spray, no bites. Forget = Bites.

  • For my 1 year olds (twins), I use Ceramoz. Its gentle, no offending smell and it works. My son who is the other mosquito magnet, have not had a bite after we religiously applied the cream for him. I thank the doctor who introduced this to us. My wife refuse to use OFF for our babies as she is worried about chemicals. This cream is gentle enough for parents to feel comfortable enough for babies.

For my house, i setup physical barriers to prevent mosquitoes from entering. I know i cant be applying repellents on my kids even in the comfort of our own homes. I also don’t really know why insect screens are not so prevalent in Asia. When i lived in US and Australia, its as standard as curtains. I hope the government can look into this and encourage more to screen up their houses. How does one get bitten at home if those mosquitoes cant even enter?

  • Windows. I used the standard magnetic screen for my windows. I can keep my windows opened without fear of mosquitoes entering. I used Magicseal.com.sg, which on hindsight is a bit pricy but it works. Another company that can be considered is insectout.com.sg which has pretty awesome reviews online. I may have considered them if i knew about them earlier. Lastly, one can DIY too https://magneticinsectscreen.blogspot.com/p/insect-screen.html.
  • Regardless, just seriously screen up your windows. The unfounded concern about light and wind flow is indeed unfounded. I hardly notice the screens are on these days but the i can surely imagine the number of mosquitoes they blocked out.
  • Sliding doors. I had a hard time solving this problem because the sliding screens are really expensive but more importantly, my dog cant get in or out by herself to poo or pee in my patio. So even with my windows protected, the mosquitoes are entering from my opened sliding doors at my patio. I finally found salvation from the folks at www.stopmosquito.sg. The screen is magnetic and so my dog can walk in and out by herself and the screen closes by itself because of the magnets. After i installed the screen, indeed like they promised, i hardly have mosquitoes to kill indoors anymore. Also its decent looking enough for my wife to agree.

With above, you are pretty safe from spreading your dengue to your family. As i don’t close my front door during day time, some mosquitoes may enter from my front door (rarely but occasionally), to really go all out to prevent, you may:

  • Xiaomi Mosquito Electronic Swatter. I love this. It’s not those cheapo battery operated bs swatter. This is usb charged. It last for weeks per charge. Smart design that prevents kids from getting stunt. Size is perfect, big enough to kill yet nimble for fast action. I have killed tons of mosquitoes in the park and my garden with this swatter. (I hereby thank the designer, who in my opinion, designed the AK47 of mosquito swatters). if you are still using your hands to clap mosquitoes, this you must try.

  • Peststop Photocatalyst Mozzie Magnet. It 100% works. First time i used it, I left it outdoor at my patio overnight. Next morning, i opened it up and saw at least 12 mosquitoes. I quickly covered it back and then used my electronic swatter to place over the opening. It was mosquito fireworks as they attempted to escape. (yes a bit cruel, i could have just left them in the trap to starve and die, but then they came to my house to bite me and my family…) The trap is also useful with a timer socket. i leave it on from 4pm to 1pm indoors near my front door which I leave open. It is to cater to the super commando mosquito who can make it past the various defenses i already have in place.

Alright, the above are the stuff i have done to protect my family from Dengue and my vengeance on mosquitoes in general. I hope you can learn something from my experience and rid the world from Dengue. Take care my fellow man (kind).
